EL Wire is an electroluminescent wire - it has a central copper wire with a phosphorus material coating and two tiny transmitter wires wrapped around it. It is then covered by a PVC coating and finally a coloured vinyl coat closely representing the final colour when lit. We have a few colour choices in stock!

A driver is needed to make the wire glow. The driver takes the voltage from a DC power source and inverts it to **0 volts AC, or from a **0 volts AC step-down to **0 volts AC. When connected to a power source and driver, the charge creates a beautiful **0° glow very similar to neon lighting.

EL Wire consumes very little draw on the battery. A 9m section of EL Wire at ***0 Hz draws less than **0 mA. A 3m section of EL Wire at *0 Hz powered by two AA batteries will operate around *8 hours before battery replacement or charge is needed. When making use of rechargeable batteries, higher milliamps are available allowing for longer operation.
We have different drivers available, depending on the length of EL Wire you need to run. Brightness is directly related to the Hz level. The higher the Hz, the brighter the glow and inversely, the lower the Hz, the dimmer the glow, this however greatly affects the life span of the wire. Should the length of the EL Wire not be properly matched to the Driver then driver failure and damage will occur. With a *0 Hz driver around seven years’ service can be expected.

EL Wire can be installed on nearly any surface using a variety of fastening methods. Super glue, vinyl glue and silicone adhesive are suitable for permanent applications, even stitched to clothing, shoes, bags, PC’s or bicycles. The applications are endless, just use your imagination. For temporary applications; clear tape, double back tape, tie wraps or plastic clips may be used. Care should be taken when running EL Wire around corners and bends as not to make too sharp a bend as this will damage the phosphorus coating on the copper cable, leaving a dark patch in the damaged area. EL Wire can be used outside. The EL Wire can be used in the rain, but the two ends being the end cap and inverter should not be exposed to any moisture. Inverters *2 volts DC or **0 volts AC should only be used indoors or mounted in a suitable IP*5 box. The end cap should be sealed with an approved weather sealant.
