The World Health Organization recommends a daily maximum intake of 3.7mg of nitrate per kg of body weight for adults.

Nitrates in food can be as dangerous as pesticides. Nitrates have been blamed for serious diseases, including cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Many fresh fruit and vegetables contain excessive nitrates.

Due to the dangers they present, most places strictly regulate nitrates in meat products. However the nitrate content of fruit and vegetables is largely unregulated. This means nitrates in fruit and vegetables are potentially more dangerous than pesticides and other residues, which are the subject to stringent testing and penalties.

A scientific approach to food safety

Greentestworks by measuring the electrical conductivity of the fruit or vegetable matter being tested.Lower resistance = higher nitrate content. The presence of nitrate ions in organic matter measurably increases conductivity. This measurement differs according to the ion concentration and cell structure of the fruit or vegetable under test.

Calibrated through extensive testing

Anmez scientists developed the Greentestnitrate content protocols by using a mass spectrometer to determine nitrate levels in a large number of fruit and vegetable specimens.Testing a range of specimens under laboratory conditions allowed us to establish normative levels for various fruit and vegetable species.

A high degree of accuracy

The results were applied to test algorithms which have been coded into the Greentestdevice. The device has been extensively back-checked against specimens that were subsequently tested with a mass spectrometer.

The device is certified to be more than 90% accurate according to third party testing. This is more than sufficient to produce a valid assessment of nitrate content.
