What Was It?
The standard copper cash was a small, round coin with a square hole in the center. It was typically cast from an alloy of copper, lead, and tin, giving it its characteristic bronze-like color. Design and Meaning
One side of the coin was usually inscribed with four Chinese characters, indicating the reign title of the emperor during whose rule it was minted (e.g., "Kāngxī Tōngbǎo" 康熙通寶). The other side might be blank or feature mint marks or symbols. This design emphasized that the coin's value and legitimacy derived directly from the emperor's mandate.
