Cipollini takes to the track with the Speed Frameset. Speed
is the only way to take the track. And it takes the banked
oval as only Super Mario can, with style and strength. Like
Mario, it's a product of Italy, with everything starting from
vision and ending up with paint, taken care of in a land that has
breathed bike racing for more than **0 years.
Track bikes are amongst the most straightforward of the bike
world. They're about going fast and turning left.
Compliance is not an issue on the track, as the riding surface
varies between smooth and glassy. All day riding comfort is
not an issue because track races are over in a time that varies
between seconds and minutes. So the bike should be stiff all
around. The bike should put you in a fast position. And
the bike should be fast itself because every gram shaved gets you
there faster. That's why Cipollini utilizes Toray's
T***0.M*6J high-modulus carbon plies in the frame and fork and
oversized bearings with a tapered steerer and an extended seat tube
that mates to an included proprietary seat post: any lateral give
is energy wasted.
The Speed has been shaped to slip though the wind. The
nosecone head tube, the fork crown meeting up with the down tube,
the down tube reaching down to curve around the fork, the rear
wheel tucked almost inside the seat tube, and the seat stays
lowered and lengthened to smooth air flow around the wheel, it's
all about parting the air and moving it around without
disruptions.
The bike's geometry has also been tweaked for speed. The head tube
is super short, stopping at least *5mm (exact number depends on the
frame size) shy of the top tube's high point. This way, you
don't need a negative stem to get a low position. And if
that's too low, *5mm of spacers still leaves the stem looking
slammed to most people. The wheelbase is tight, with the rear
wheel tucked so close to the seat tube that it's almost
interfering with the bottom bracket.
Cipollini is also aware that people have different ideas about how
track bikes should handle. This is why they actually offer
two size runs of the Speed, one with *1mm of bottom bracket drop
(alto), the other with *3mm of bottom bracket drop (basso).
Pursuiters, people who race longer tracks will prefer the stability
of the basso's bottom bracket, while sprinters and those who ride
short tracks will probably opt for better pedal clearance of the
alto.
There are a few nods to convention on the Speed. Both are
extremely practical. The first is the threaded English bottom
bracket standard. The second is the built-in dial-adjusters
found on the rear fork tips. These make sure that the wheel
rests in the same spot every time and won't slip forward when
you're exploding out of a standing start.
The Cipollini Speed Frameset it's what turns a track racer into a
missile.
