A drum brake is brake that uses friction caused by a
set of shoes or pads that press outward against a rotating
cylinder-shaped part. A metal cylinder to
which pressure is applied by
a braking mechanism in order
to arrest rotation of the
wheel or shaft to which
the cylinder is
attached.
There are two types of brakes used on modern cars: Disc brakes and
drum brakes. All new cars have disc brakes on the front wheels,
while the rear wheels may use either disc or drum brakes.
