M.S.Swaminthan Research Foundation is
implementing the Bio Industrial watershed program in Villupuram
district, Tamilnadu. Since ***7 Kalamkari Bags
production has been initiated with Poondazhir SHG based in Karasanur
village to provide livelihood opportunity for
resource poor women. They have been trained to produce bags and related
products by using Kalamkari cloth materials. Kalamkari is
the name given to the natural dye and hand/block prints used on
cotton textile. It is native to Andhra Pradesh. This group of
trained women makes eye-catchy bags with the Kalamkari
material.
So these bags are easy on the skin due to the natural dyes
and are eco friendly. They come as fresh air for those who are
looking for trendy, comfortable and cost-effective bags that are
eco-friendly. This women group makes have sales tie up with
various institutions such as MOOWES ((The Marketing Organization
of Women Entrepreneurs), Contemporary Window, Capegemini an IT
company, Dhakshinchitra and Rope International. The bags are also
been exported to USA and marketed by friends and interns who
visit the project.
