Hoa Loc mango is one of the most well known varieties of mango
under cultivation in the Mekong river delta, for its aroma and
sweetness.
Hoa Loc mango originated in Hoa Hung commune, Cai Be district, Tien
Giang province, formerly named Hoa Loc commune, Giao Duc district,
Dinh Tuong province. Its name is also derived from the old name of
the commune where alluvial deposits is most suitable for the tree.
Each oval shaped mango is from **0 **0 gram in weight, bright
yellow at maturity, fleshy and less fibrous, very sweet and
aromatic.
Hoa Loc mango has presently grown on large scale, in many provinces
of the Mekong river delta like Tien Giang, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc,
Dong Nai, Ba Ria Vung Tau, Dong Thap, and so on. Mango
Transplantation and seedling selection, application of modern
techniques are done with, aiming at raising the quality and
productivity.
For example, Hoa Loc mango are grown mainly in *3 communes of Cai
Be district, Tien Giang province on more than 1,**0 hectares, with
annual output of about *5,**0 metric tons.
Cao Lanh district, Dong Thap province has developed even stronglier
than Cai Be, with nearly 2,**0 hectares under cultivation of Hoa
Loc cat mango and cat chu mango, and annual output of about *6,**0
metric tons. Mango trees are seen not only in orchards but also
along rivers, roads, and highways. Nearly all farmer households
here engaged in growing mango, mainly for self-sufficiency. Mango
growing has developed for 5 years.
The demand for Hoa Loc mango has continually growing in recent
years, especially in Ho Chi Minh City and Northern cities and
provinces. First class mangoes are sold at *3,**0 *5,**0 Dongs per
kilogram; second class ones at *8,**0 *0,**0 Dongs per
kilogram.
It is expected that the total area for Hoa Loc mango will increase
up to 9,**0 hectares and the output will be around *0,**0 metric
tons by the year ***0.
