Should you buy a proof gold Krugerrand? What's so special about a proof? The South African mint first stamped out Krugerrands on gold blanks from the Rand Refinery in ***7. Both proof gold Krugerrands and uncirculated coins were released- however it was hard the general public to tell which was a proof gold krugerrand and which was not because they both both had a mirror finish. This sent the mint back to the drawing board to find some way to differentiate a proof from the other coins. In ***8 they tried two variations- a frosted finish on one side, mirrored on the other, and a dual frosted finish. They also upgraded the number of reeds (indentations along the diameter of a coin)
