HAREX Mill cut steel fibers have a totally
different bonding behavior in the hardened cement
paste.
The mechanism of a fiber-reinforced concrete is mainly based on
the restraint of the formation and extension of cracks.
Therein, the bonding behavior of steel fibers in concrete is the essential influence factor. Due to the inferior surface bonding, wire fibers have only a crack-bridging effects. That means that after the occurrence of visible crack opening, the end anchorages of the wire fibers anchor the crack and, thus, transmit the forces from one crack edge to the other. Wire fibers have to show high tensile strengths due to their minor unit capacity factor (*0%**0%). Wire fibers are mainly pulled out by plasticizing, by which a tough concrete behavior- in the cracked condition is formed.
In contrast to wire fibers, steel fibers have a totally different bonding behavior in the hardened cement paste.
The microscopic photograph shows definitely: mill-cut fibers anchor with their total length in the hardened cement paste.
Thus, they offer a maximum protection against the formation of cracks in the concrete. Their unit capacity factor amounts to **0%, i.e. the total tensile strength of the steel fiber has a crack-restraining effect.
