 PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a *0 digit alphanumeric number, issued in the form of a plastic card, by the Income Tax Department of India. PAN enables department to link to all transaction (TCS/TDS credits, income tax return or any other transaction) of holder with the department. So PAN acts as an identifier of the holder with tax department, India.

Typical PAN is ABCIE***1F.

Where first 3 characters (ABC from above PAN) are series of PAN which start from AAA to ZZZ.

Fourth character (D) defines type of assesses. Please find assesses status as below:

A = Association of Persons (AOP)

B = Body of Individuals (BOI)

C = Company

F = Firm

G = Government

H = HUF(Hindu Undivided Family)

J = Artificial Juridical Person

L = Local Authority

P = Person

Fifth character (E) represents first character of the PAN holder’s last name/surname

Next four characters (***1) in above PAN represents number running from ***1 to ***9.

Last character (F) of PAN card of above is an alphabetic check digit.
