In India, the damask rose was brought by Moghul in the *1 century and rose oil distillation is being done since *6 century. There are three species of Rose that are currently grown for the production of rose water, rose oil , rose concerete, absolute and attar.These species are Rosa damascena Mill, R centiolia L. and R. gallica L. In these three species, R. damascene is the most important source of quality rose oil and is cultivated in turkey, Bulgaria and India. R. centifolia is cultivated inn Southern France, Morocco and Egypt, whereas R. gallica, which resembles Damask rose , is cultivated in Ukraine. The total world production of rose oil is estimated to be ****0 tonnes only. Bulgaria shares *0% of the Damask rose oil production , Turky *5% and the rest 5 % shared by other countres , ncludn India . In India rose cultvation is done on about ********0 hectares of land.This is the ost modern method of distillation and suitable for large scale producton of oil. The whole plant consists of three units, a boiler, distillation unit and distilled after passing through a receiver fed to another still through cohobation column to ensure complete recovery of ol. The part of the oil is also collected fom first receiver and the remaining from the second.It ia advantageous to collect the distillate from the second separator andfeed back t to the ditillation tank in plae of fresh water.Complete distillation in boiler operated dstilation unt takes **5 hrs. The recovery varies from 0.**5% - 0.*3%. depending upon the capacity of the boiler, the unit may cost Rs. **9 lacs The other advantage with the system is that several distillation units can be connected with boiler.
