Overview of Ivy Extracts
Ivy extracts are natural plant active ingredients extracted from
the stems and leaves of the plant Hedera helix L. They mainly
consist of ivy saponins (such as ivy saponin C, ivy glycoside D,
etc.) and also contain flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins, etc. The
extraction methods are mostly alcohol extraction or water
extraction, and then they are concentrated and spray-dried to form
brown or brownish-yellow fine powders, which have good water
solubility and stability. 1

Main Effects and Functions
1. Promote respiratory system health: The saponin components in the
ivy extract can increase the secretion of the lung mucosa, dilute
the mucus in the respiratory tract, promote the discharge of
phlegm, and have a significant expectorant effect; at the same
time, it can relax the smooth muscle of the bronchi, relieve
bronchial spasm, and improve the respiratory function of patients
with asthma and chronic bronchitis. Clinical studies have shown
that after children with asthma take the ivy extract for 3 hours,
there is a statistically significant improvement in lung capacity,
and the effect is more obvious after *0 days; patients undergoing
nasal surgery use its syrup, and nasal secretions significantly
decrease, and the local infection rate is significantly reduced.
Skin and anti-aging: The polyphenolic substances in the ivy extract
have strong antioxidant activity, can eliminate free radicals, and
delay skin cell aging; at the same time, it can inhibit sebum
secretion, help hydrate dry skin, reduce facial wrinkles, and
improve skin texture. Its extract is often added to lotions and
ointments, used to resist wrinkles, moisturize and repair, and can
also alleviate skin inflammation (such as burns, injuries), promote
cell regeneration and healing.
3. Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial: The saponins and flavonoid
components in ivy can inhibit the release of inflammatory factors
(such as TNF-α, IL*6), reduce synovial tissue edema, and have a
relieving effect on rheumatoid arthritis and joint swelling and
pain; its extract has inhibitory effects on pathogenic bacteria
such as Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, and can be used
for wet compress treatment of skin infections (such as impetigo,
eczema), and can also be taken internally to assist in improving
respiratory infections (such as acute bronchitis).
4. Other auxiliary effects: The ivy saponins in the extract can
also relax the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract and
relieve spastic pain; its components such as chlorogenic acid can
lower transaminase levels, improve liver function, and have certain
auxiliary effects on hypertension of yang hyperactivity type and
hepatitis; in addition, animal experiments show that its extract
can inhibit the formation of cholesterol stones and have a
dissolving effect on early cholesterol stones.
