Metallurgical coke¿&frac*2;is an important raw material for pig iron production in the blast furnace. During this process the coke undergoes severe mechanical, thermal and chemical stresses. One of these is the CO*-gasification which may lead to a decisive mechanical weakening of the lump coke by increased carbon burn-off. The CO*-reactivity is influenced by different parameters as e.g. temperature, gas composition and catalytic effects.
But merely thermal treatment of the coke at temperatures above ***0 ¿&frac*2;C may result in partly decisive changes in CO*-reactivity at a standardized temperature of ***0 ¿&frac*2;C. Five metallurgical cokes produced either from different coal types or from coals of substantially different origin have been heat-treated up to ***0 ¿&frac*2;C, and the subsequent reactivity has been determined according to the NSC test procedure.
