Molybdenum exists as metallic phase solid-dissolved in the matrix of molybdenum-containing pig iron. After tapping from blast furnaces or medium-frequency furnaces, the hot metal is directly transferred to converters or electric arc furnaces (EAFs). The high carbon content (3.5%€“4.2%) and inherent silicon in hot metal form a strong reducing atmosphere, which prevents molybdenum from being oxidized or volatilized into slag during the whole smelting process. The overall molybdenum recovery rate reaches *5%€“*9%.
