In South Africa, used vegetable oil is the only viable feedstock to produce biodiesel. Previously, commercial users of vegetable oil, such as hotels, restaurants, franchise outlets, fish & chip shops, take-aways, catering companies etc, paid waste disposal companies to remove their used vegetable oil from their premises. Nowadays, the biodiesel industry and a network of collectors, recover a large percentage of used cooking oil from these commercial users.

Sources of used vegetable oil are scarce, but new sources have to be constantly found to satisfy the growing demand for biodiesel. Fortunately, used vegetable oil no longer finds its way to landfill sites.
