Solar Charge controller
Description:
A charge controller, or charge regulator is
similar to the voltage regulator in your car. It regulates the
voltage and current coming from the solar panels going to the
battery. Most "*2 volt" panels put out about *6 to *0 volts, so if
there is no regulation the batteries will be damaged from
overcharging. Most batteries need around *4 to *4.5 volts to get
fully charged.
The function of the solar charge controller is to
protect the battery in a solar electric system from being
overcharged or being over-discharged. Overcharged batteries have a
much shorter life time than well cared for batteries since the
electolyte is boiled off as gas and lost. Overly discharged lead
acid batteries become permanently damaged, so a solar charge
controller is used to disconnect any load when the battery is
discharged down to a safe cut off voltage.
