of X-Dome construction. But besides those characteristics, the XDome

offers another that is vitally important today because it has

to do with our environment. X-Domes are green buildings – they

are considered among the greenest of today’s building alternatives.

X-Dome Benefits: Survivability

Whether it’s your home, your children’s school or some other

structure that you and your loved ones spend time in, nothing beats

knowing that you’re in a place that cannot be destroyed by most

natural or manmade disasters. That’s the confidence X-Domes

What is your dome made of?

Our Domes are made up of 8 equal sized sections of a material called EPS.

EPS stands for Expanded polystyrenewhich is a plastic foam material that has

certain desirable properties because of its structure.

It is extraordinarily light and buoyant, and a good insulator against heat /cold and

sound. It can be used as a building material or a design element, and can be

molded into many shapes for a number of household uses as well. In most

cases, expanded polystyrene foamis white and is composed of small,

interconnected beads. It is made by combining the chemicals ethylene and

benzene, to make a compound known as styrene. The styrene is then treated

with other chemicals which cause the styrene molecules to polymerize, or to

group together in long chains. This reaction is only allowed to proceed to a

certain point, and is then stopped. The resulting beads are allowed to cool and

are then cleaned.

After formation and cleaning, the beads must be expanded, which happens in

three main stages. First, the beads are heated with hot air or steam until their

density is three percent of its original value. The beads are then cooled for *4

hours and molded. Once inside the mold, they are injected with low-pressure

steam, which further expands the beads and fuses them together. When the

mold is cooled, the expanded polystyrene is finished and ready for use or

shipment.

When choosing EPS you are getting a material with built-in features that provide

environmental benefits. Building materials and their impact on the environment

must be considered over the full life of the building structure. This is considered

the ”life cycle” of the building. This includes inventorying the cost to the

environment from material production, transportation, installation, use, and end of

life reuse, recycling, or disposal.

Research has shown that for both residential buildings and commercial buildings

that operations contribute to over *0% of the building’s impact on global

warming. Reducing energy use and its resulting pollution is the best way to

reduce our impact on the environment.

The energy savings from EPS in structures can translate into emission

reductions of tons of carbon dioxide per year EPS improves the energy efficiency

over the full operating life of the building resulting in a positive impact on the

environment.
