Toughened Glass and Heat Strengthened Glass

Toughened (or tempered) glass is produced by heating glass close to molten point and then quenching. This treatment enhances the strength and thermal stability of glass. The glass will break into cellular pieces when the external force exceeds its strength. Hence, it is a highly safe glass.
Characteristics:
a. The strength of tempered glass is **5 fold of that of common glass with the same thickness; anti-bending strength is **5 fold of the common glass.
b. When the glass is broken by external force, the glass will break into small and obtuse shape resulting in reduced harm to the human body.
c. The glass is even resistant to rapidly changed temperature, so it has better thermal resistance and anti-shock than common glass.

The production of heat strengthened glass is similar to that of tempered glass. The heat temperature is a little lower than that of tempered glass. Besides, the quenching speed is also lower. The glass strength is lower than tempered glass but about twice that of annealed glass. When broken, it will break into bigger pieces like annealed glass and cannot be regarded as safety glass.
