in ***3.Initially studied sculpture at the Académie de la Grande
Chaumiére in Paris (***9/*0) and later architecture at Yale
University in New Haven, Connecticut, graduating in ***4. He
received a scholarship there which enabled him to travel to Europe
(***4/*5). On his return, he taught at the Cranbrook Academy of
Art. In ***7, he began a collaboration with Charles Eames which
culminated in a series of highly progressive and prize-winning
furniture designs for The Museum of Modern Art´s ***0 "Organic
Design in Home Furnishings" competition. He later produced several
highly successful furniture designs for Knoll International. He
worked in his father´s architectural office until Eliel´s death in
***0. His greatest architectural project was the remarkable TWA
terminal at John F. Kennedy Airport, New York.
Design Eero Saarinen, ***6.
In his purist approach to design, Finnish-born Eero Saarinen sought
out the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective
structural solution. He designed the ***6 Tulip chair in terms of
its setting, rather than a particular shape. "In any design
problem, one should seek the solution in terms of the next largest
thing." he said. "If the problem is a chair, then its solution must
be found in the way it relates to the room..." In the Tulip,
Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: "Every significant
piece of furniture has a holistic structure." Winner of the ***9
Museum of Modern Art Award, the Tulip is Saarinen's genius solution
to clearing up the "slum of legs" that populates the under-carriage
of most dining sets.
