item no; BL***9

Eero Saarinen was the son of the celebrated Finnish architect and first President of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Eliel Saarinen. Born in Helsinki, he emigrated with his family to the United States in ***3.Initially studied sculpture at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiére in Paris (***9/*0) and later architecture at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, graduating in ***4. He received a scholarship there which enabled him to travel to Europe (***4/*5). On his return, he taught at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. In ***7, he began a collaboration with Charles Eames which culminated in a series of highly progressive and prize-winning furniture designs for The Museum of Modern Art´s ***0 "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition. He later produced several highly successful furniture designs for Knoll International. He worked in his father´s architectural office until Eliel´s death in ***0. His greatest architectural project was the remarkable TWA terminal at John F. Kennedy Airport, New York.

Design Eero Saarinen, ***6.
In his purist approach to design, Finnish-born Eero Saarinen sought out the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. He designed the ***6 Tulip chair in terms of its setting, rather than a particular shape. "In any design problem, one should seek the solution in terms of the next largest thing." he said. "If the problem is a chair, then its solution must be found in the way it relates to the room..." In the Tulip, Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: "Every significant piece of furniture has a holistic structure." Winner of the ***9 Museum of Modern Art Award, the Tulip is Saarinen's genius solution to clearing up the "slum of legs" that populates the under-carriage of most dining sets.
Construction notes: Base is a cast aluminum, rilsan coated finish. Shell is molded fiberglass with a reinforced plastic bonded finish. Upholstered foam cushion is removable, with zippered cover and velcro fastening. Base and shell finish available in white or black. Upholstery available with a seat cushion only or with a fully upholstered inner shell. The signature of Eero Saarinen is located on the underside of the base.
