Property

(1)A colourless and odourless, sweettasting viscous liquid and it is hygroscopic.

(2)Miscible with water and ethanol; aqueous solution is neutral.

(3Soluble in ethyl acetate and ether; insoluble in benzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, carbon bisulfide, petroleum ether and oils.
(4)It is a good solubilizer, plasticizer, moisturising and preserving agent.
