Photonics TRIAC Dimmable LED Driver
What is a TRAIC dimmable LED driver?
The basic definition of TRIAC means ‘Triode for Alternating
Current’, this ‘is a generalised trade name for an electrical
component that can conduct current in either direction when it is
triggered’. So basically meaning the electronic control of a
current flow supplied to a circuit.
Due to the advancement of LED technology in recent years, it has
become a capable light source for replacing lighting system such as
fluorescent and incandescent lights, especially in the TRIAC dimmer
infrastructure. Many researchers and developers have spent time
with LED’s compatibility with TRIAC dimmers, the reason being that
incandescent light source uses more watts with a much shorter life
span. Whereas an LED bulb has proven to be an excellent substitute
with exceptionally less power used with a longer life span.
The TRIAC dimmer was originally designed for incandescent bulbs
with the higher power usage, and the problem initially faced when
trying to convert a TRIAC dimmer for LED’s was due to the lower
power usage, the outcome may have been a visible flicker. So what
needed to be done was to stabilise the interaction between dimmer
and LED.
To cut a long story short Photonics has developed a TRIAC dimmable
driver compatible for LED’s, with multiple specifications that have
been proven and tested.
