Melinjo belongs to Gnetum family plant which originated from
Indonesia. Melinjo is dioecious gymnosperm plant (has separated
male and female reproduction organ), can reach height of *2 meters
with conical trunk.
This small three is native to Indonesia and "melinjo" is the common
Indonesian name for the plant. Melinjo has been consumed for
centuries by the Indonesian population
The history of Melinjo can be traced back to the Kingdom of
Yogyakarta and Banten, where the melinjo tree grows in abundance.
In this area one can find a high concentration of melinjo trees and
expectedly with the highest per capita consumption of melinjo. It
may not be a coincidence that the population of Yogyakarta also has
the longest life-expectancy in Indonesia, an average *0% higher
than the rest of the population.
Melinjo is commonly cultivated throughout Indonesia and the seeds,
leaves and flowers are used as an ingredient in many dishes served
on important traditional occasions. For instance, the seeds of
melinjo are used for producing emping; a cracker, one of the
staples in the Indonesian kitchen. Emping can be found in any
well-stocked Asian supermarket globally. In addition to the seeds,
melinjo tree also provides the farmers with other valuable
benefits. It provides shade in the villages making the living
conditions more pleasant in the extreme tropical heat. Maybe even
