history of stone chime can be traced back to Huang-ti times, which
is about 4650 years ago. In the following dynasties, Lingbi stone
was confirmed as the first choice stone material for making chimes.
Some scholars from Japan and Switzerland who research the history
of Chinese musical instruments call the stone chimes as the ancient
piano. The so-called eight-pitch-stone in ancient China just refers
to the stone mined from the Qingyun Mountain in Lingbi County. The
chimes collected in the Imperial Palace and the Temple of Confucius
are both made of Lingbi stone.
