Benzoic acid is
scaly or needle shaped, with the smell of benzene or formaldehyde,
flammable. The relative density is 1.***9. The melting point is
**2.4ºC, the boiling point is **9ºC, and the refractive index is
1.**4. Vapors are volatile. Flash point (close cup) ******3ºC.
Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, methanol, ethyl
ether, chloroform, benzene, toluene, carbon disulfide, carbon
tetrachloride and turpentine. It sublimated rapidly at **0 degrees
and evaporated at the same time as steam. Benzoic acid is widely
found in nature in the form of free acids, esters or their
derivatives. In the form of free acid and benzyl ester, for
example, in the leaves and stems of some plants, there are free
forms in the leaves and stems of some plants, in the form of methyl
or benzyl esters in the essence, and in the form of its derivative,
equine acid in horse urine.
