Acid slurry or
alkyl benzene sulphonate, commonly known as Linear ALKYL Benzene
Sulphonate (LABSA) is made by sulphonation of linear alkyl benzene
with a suitable sulphonating agent. Since it is
miscible with water and has a low salt content, it is the most
important raw material for producing anionic surfactants, it is
extensively used in the manufacture of synthetic washing detergent
powders, cakes and liquids, as well as soaps. This major
industrial surfactant is used in formulating various types of
household and industrial detergents and also acts as an emulsifier
in agricultural herbicides and pesticides. Acid slurry is
neutralized by slow addition of caustic soda solution, keeping the
pH between 7 to 9.
