Gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) or γ-butyrolactone is
a hygroscopic, colorless, water-miscible liquid with a weak,
characteristic odor. It is the simplest *-carbon lactone.
It is mainly used as an intermediate in the production of other
chemicals, such as N-methyl**-pyrrolidone
