Wild bean (Phaseolus) is found in tropical and subtropical regions. Most major sorts of wild beans (more than **0) originate from Central and South America, but there are also Asian and African sorts.
Bean was cultivated in Mexico and Peru in ***0 BC (before the Incas). Just like potatoes, it was brought to Europe on Christopher Columbus expeditions in *5th – *6th century BC and afterwards it spread in the colonies in Africa and Asia. In Bulgaria growing bean was referred to for the first time in documents dating from ***8 – ***3.
