Home of cultivated lentil are the mountain regions of Middle Asia. From there it has supposedly been brought and cultivated in the valley of Tigris and Euphrates, Egypt, by ancient Semites and later brought to the whole Mediterranean. Lentil grains have been found in the tomb of Pharaoh Ramses II. It has been well-known and valued in Greece and Rome as well. Lentil grains have been found in the ruins of Troy and Pompeii.

On Bulgarian territory lentil has been known since the ancient times. Carbonized grains have been found in different pre-historical settlements as long ago as the Neolithic and Palaeolithic periods. During the Middle Ages it was often mentioned as the main staple in Bulgarian monasteries. In different taxation documents from XVI – XVII century lentil was listed as an agricultural product and was taxed. This leaves no doubt about its permanent and stable presence on the Bulgarian table.
