Nigeria has been a major world producer of peanuts (otherwise known as Groundnut) for decades. The country is the 3rd largest producer of peanuts in the world, with an annual production capacity of over 4 million metric tonnes. According USA Department of Agriculture, Nigeria's output for peanuts for 2018 is 4,422,000metric tonnes.

It is either grown for its nut, oil or its vegetative residue (haulms). It is the 4th most important source of edible oil and its seeds contain high quality edible oil , easily digestible protein and carbohydrates.
