Pigeon Peas
The pigeon pea, also called the Congo or Gunga pea, is a widely
grown legume with a variety of
uses.
Malawi is among the top exporters of pigeon peas in the world, and
Blantyre has one of the
highest concentrations of the crop’s processors in
Africa.
Pigeon peas are an important source of protein and Vitamin B.
People use the seed as a whole,
dehulled or as flour. In the Asian region, people eat the seed
mostly processed into "dhal," the
easily stored decorticated split pea.
