Piston Rings
Piston ring is the metal ring used in piston grooves, divided into 2 types, compression ring and oil-control ring. Compression ring is used to seal the mixture gas in combustion chamber, while oil-control ring is to strike off the engine oil on cylinder. Piston ring is a metal flexible ring with high expand deformation, which seals the cylinder depending on the pressure difference between the gas and liquid.
The main functions of the piston ring are sealing, oil-controlling, heat transmit, guiding.
Sealing means to seal the gas, to prevent the gas in combustion chamber into crankshaft, to control the leak of the gas and to raise the efficiency of the heat. The leak of gas is not only to decrease the engine power, but only to deteriorate the engine oil.
Its the main function of the compression ring.
Oil-controlling means to strike off the redundant lubricant oil from the cylinder wall with oil mask on cylinder wall to ensure the lubrication between cylinder, piston and ring.
Its the main function of the oil-control ring, which is a key factor in modern high speed engine.
Heat transmit means to transmit the heat to cylinder liner to cool down.
Guiding means to make piston move smoothly in cylinder, to prevent direct contact between piston and cylinder wall, to lower the friction power and prevent piston to hit the cylinder.
Material of the piston rings were cast iron in early time, as the technology improvement, steel piston rings were invented, and as the improvement of engines, many surface treatment was applied, including, spraying,electroplating,chrome plating, nitridation, physical deposition, surface coating, and Zinc manganese series phosphating treatment
