Polylactic
acid (PLA) is a biodegradable as well as recyclable polyester made
from renewable feedstock. Lactic acid as the raw material is
produced by fermentation of glucose or sucrose and is refined to a
high purity.
Applications
of PLA have been developed as food packaging material, textiles,
and recently also as engineering plastics. Basic information is
provided on the lactic acid production processes, PLA properties,
production process routes, producers, conversion processes, as well
as market potential. At the present time PLA is a niche product but
with strong growth potential.
