Aquaculture is absent from the overall planning framework for sustainable fisheries and coastal zone management in many nations. Capture fisheries and aquaculture operations are researched, planned and managed as if they were independent entities, but they share many common concerns. These include the genetic diversity in hatchery-raised fish, and the sustainability of fish meal/oil fisheries due to demands from aquaculture plus - the most obvious of all - their products enter a common marketplace and distribution system. Fisheries and coastal area management processes need to incorporate aquaculture into the longer-term outlook for managing the fisheries of the future. Comprehensive, in-depth examinations of the interdependencies of aquaculture and capture fisheries are required. Macro-economic factors are not the sole drivers of success in aquaculture. In the *1st century, the environmental and social cost/benefit of aquatic food production cannot be externalised, and "social profit" is as important as economic. Success of aquaculture is dependent not only on the technical needs for hatcheries to produce seed and feed mills to produce feeds, but also on markets, equipment and the overall capabilities of the entire "seafood infrastructure
