The Wilier Twin Blade Frameset takes a unique approach to font-end
aerodynamics and stability as the crowing touch on a fast ride.
That front end eschews the common fork crown for longer blades that
reach past the crown up to the handlebars. This increases stiffness
by nature of the wider blades and the fact that the handlebar is
clamped in two places by what is the equivalent of two *0mm long
stem clamps (which can be swapped for *0mm clamps). Steering is now
easier and more precise, as there's less flex in the system. Of
equal importance are the improved aerodynamics. By moving the fork
blades away from the spinning wheel, there's less turbulence
crowded around the spokes. And to make sure that airflow stays
smooth, the legs are long front-to-rear, as long as *0mm at one
point, to keep air moving with as little turbulence as possible.
And if you glance at the seat stays, you'll see that they, too,
have a wider stance, also to keep any turbulence coming off of them
away from the turbulence created by the rear wheel.
Keeping with the aero theme, the bike has a narrow 1 1/8" steerer
to secure the fork to the frame. The integrated brakes, which come
with the frameset, are mounted behind the fork and under the chain
stays. These are TRP linear-pull stoppers, and by being anchored to
the frame, they respond quickly to s and have little flex;
stiff braking when you need it.
Wilier's road racing heritage is very much in evidence in the rest
of the frame. The **-ton carbon utilized is light and stiff. The
geometry sports a **-degree seat angle and the seat post has a rail
so the seat clamp can be positioned for laid-back or aggressive
positioning and certainly can fall on the legal side of the UCI's
position stipulations; figure this goes back to an effective
**-degree angle and forward to an effective **-degree angle. The
Twin Blade is stiff without being a board, thanks to short seat
stays that allow for some vertical give.
Wilier also has a few design features you won't find anywhere
else. Their Easy Adjust dropouts allow you to move the rear wheel
fore or aft by 6mm, which can both fine-tune aerodynamics and ease
of removal. The orbital front derailleur hanger allows you to
change the pitch of the derailleur at the frame to find perfect
shifting, or remove it entirely for less weight and better
aerodynamics if you're using only one chain ring.
Wilier has chosen the Wilier BB*3 (aka BB*4) standard for this
bike. On the plus side, no bearings are external; they're hidden
away behind aero shaping. And if you're a Campagnolo fan, you
won't need adapters to fit your cranks. If you prefer another
brand, the adapters are easy to come by and everything remains
internal.
Cabling runs internally, too. You can use either mechanical or
electronic shifting with the internal routing. There is a mount for
the battery on the underside of the down tube; if you want to run a
battery internally as well, you can, though there's no internal
spot specifically designed for it.
Fans of wide-rimmed wheels take note. Some, like the Zipp Firecrest
series, are a tight fit between the chain stays.
The Wilier Twin Blade Frameset slices through the air smoothly to
skin the competition.
