Blood
Meal
Blood meal is a dry, inert powder made from blood, used as a
high-nitrogen organic fertilizer and a high protein animal feed. N
= 13.25%, P = 1.0%, K = 0.6%.
Blood meal is made by drying coagulated blood, usually from cattle
or swine, into a powder. Like bone meal, it can be used as an
animal feed or as a fertilizer. Blood meal as an animal feed
provides high levels of protein. It is mainly used for cattle,
fish, and poultry.
The "blood" in blood meal refers to the by-product, most often from
slaughtered cows, that comes from meat packing plants. The blood is
dried into a powder before being packaged as blood meal. The "meal"
in blood meal refers to the dried blood that is ground into a
powder.
Blood meal contains mostly protein (about 90-95% DM) and small
amounts of fat (less than 1% DM) and ash (less than 5% DM), though
non-industrial blood meals may include other materials and thus be
richer in ash. Unlike other animal protein sources, blood meal has
a poor amino acid balance.
Blood meal is made from dried slaughterhouse waste, and is one of
the densest non-synthetic sources of nitrogen for plants. Nitrogen
is key to many aspects of healthy plant growth.
