Key Organic Intermediates & Building Blocks

These are fundamental chemicals used to synthesize more complex molecules, including plastics, resins, and pharmaceuticals.

• Acetic Acid (CH₃COOH): Used to produce vinyl acetate monomer (VAM, for paints/adhesives), acetic anhydride (for cellulose acetate), and as a solvent.

• Acetone (CH₃COCH₃): A key solvent for paints, resins, and varnishes; also a precursor to methyl methacrylate (MMA) for plexiglass and bisphenol-A (BPA) for polycarbonate.

• Methyl Methacrylate (MMA): The monomer for poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) - acrylic glass (plexiglass, lucite).

• Adipic Acid (HOOC-(CH₂)₄-COOH): Primarily used in the production of Nylon 6,6. Also used in polyurethanes and as a food additive.

• Caprolactam (C₆H₁₁NO): The precursor for Nylon 6, used in fibers and plastics.

• Terephthalic Acid (TPA) / Dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT): The co-monomer (with MEG) used to produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic and polyester fiber.

• Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM): Used to produce polyvinyl acetate (PVA) adhesives and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH).

• Formaldehyde (CH₂O): A fundamental building block for resins (urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde) used in plywood, particleboard, and coatings.

• Styrene (C₈H₈): Primarily used to make polystyrene (PS) for packaging and foam (EPS), as well as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR).
