Marine insurers do engage marine
surveyors to verify and assess damages on cargoes and vessels so as
to assist them in deciding to pay only genuine claims to
their assureds. Section *8(4) of the Marine Insurance Act ***6
says that the assured has a duty to take reasonable measures to
minimise loss. Therefore, it is imperative for insurers
to appoint a marine surveyor who understand marine
insurance to report on whether the assured takes reasonable
measures to mitigate loss and the claims are not
inflated.
