Steel angles, or "angle iron," are L-shaped structural sections defined by two perpendicular legs. They are categorized into Equal Leg (identical lengths) and Unequal Leg (different lengths).
Standard Material Grades
The grade determines the steel's strength, weldability, and corrosion resistance.

* ASTM A*6 (Carbon Steel): The industry standard. Excellent for welding, machining, and bending.
* Yield Strength: *6,**0 psi (**0 MPa)
   * Tensile Strength: *8,****0,**0 psi
* ASTM A**2 (HSLA): High-strength, low-alloy steel. Used when higher strength-to-weight ratios are needed.
* Grade *0 Yield: *0,**0 psi
* ASTM A**8 (Weathering Steel): Contains copper for atmospheric corrosion resistance; develops a protective rust-like patina.
* Stainless Steel (**4/**6): Used for food processing, marine, or highly corrosive environments.

Dimensions are typically expressed as: Leg 1 x Leg 2 x Thickness.

Physical Characteristics

* Fillet: The curved inside corner where the legs meet. The radius of this curve helps distribute stress.
* Toe: The outer edge/tip of the legs.
* Heel: The outside corner of the L-shape.
* Finishes:
* Hot Rolled (Black): Standard mill finish with some scale.
   * Galvanized: Zinc-coated for rust prevention in outdoor use.
   * Pickled & Oiled: Cleaned of scale and lightly oiled for precision work.

Weight Calculation Formula
To estimate the weight of a steel angle (Imperial):
Weight (lbs/ft) ≈ [Leg 1 + Leg 2 - Thickness] × Thickness × 3.4
(Example: A 2x2x1/4 angle is roughly 3.*9 lbs/ft).
