The areca nut is the fruit of the areca palm,
which grows in much of the tropical Pacific, Southeast and South
Asia, and parts of east Africa. It is commonly referred to as betel
nut so it is easily confused with betel leaves that are often used
to wrap it.Arecoline is responsible for some of the effects of
betel quid chewing, such as alertness, increased stamina, a sense
of well-being, euphoria, and salivation. Chewing the nut stimulates
the flow of saliva to aid digestion. Betel nut also has been used
to stimulate the appetite.Chewed betel nut produces a stimulant
response that, in low doses, is similar to caffeine or
nicotine.
