Palm Kernel Shells are the shell fractions left after the nut has
been extracted from crushing operation in the palm oil mill. This
is a by-product o the palm oil industry but is fast becoming a
important source of feedstock for biomass energy generation.
Although always traditionally used by palm oil mills as a source of
energy, interest from power generators is growing. Palm kernel
shell is a waste product obtained after the processing of palm
kernel. Palm kernel is enclosed n the shell. The shell is also
enclosed in fleshy fiber, which contains palm oil. Thus palm kernel
shell is obtained when the fibrous, fleshy fruit has been processed
to obtain palm oil. Palm kernel shells have been traditionally used
as solid fuels for stream boilers in palm oil mills across
Southeast Asia. The steam generated is used to run turbines for
electricity production. Palm Kernel shells are versatile and have
multiple uses; It can be in its natural form at power stations as a
clean alternative to coal, to form activated carbon or to pave
roads.
