Pineapple
The plant of the pineapple is a monocotyledon, herbaceous perennial,which originated in South America in the Mattogroso, between Uruguay and Brazil.In accordance with the  variety the  fruit assumes a  cylindrical or pyramidal form  and  its  weight  varies according  to  the  variety, the planting density, the climate and the handling offered the plantation. In Costa Rica this crop has increased in the last few years and has become an important source of income as an export fruit to the US and Europe.

Production of Pineapple in Costa Rica
Generalities
•The pineapple plant is typical in tropical zones, is produced at an elevation of **0 meters above sea level and requires temperatures between *3 and *0oC.
•Due to its morphological characteristics the pineapple is little demanding as to rainfall since it can take its water from the atmospheric humidity which gives it great resistance to dry spells.
•The crop requires soils that are loose, aerated and well drained.
•In Costa Rica the pineapple is primarily produced near
Buenos    Aires    de    Puntarenas,    San    Carlos,    Sarapiqu, Grecia,   Siquirres,   Gupiles,   Prez   Zeledn,   Esparza   and Orotina.
•The two varieties produced in the country are: Smooth
Cayenne  which  has  dark  colored  leaves  without  spines on their edges and the ripe fruit is reddish    orange,    has    high    sugar levels      and      characteristics      for industrialization.   The   variety   Queen or  Criollo  is  grown  commonly  in Central  America,  its  fruit  is medium size and its pulp is yellowish  white, it  has  little  fiber  and  an  excellent flavor.
•The  multiplication  of  the pineapple is with offshoots from the base of the mother plant.
