Pharmacological properties. Aqueous preparations (infusions and
extracts) from plantain leaves have a regulatory effect on gastric
secretion, that is, during hyposecretion, they excite it, and
during hypersecretion, they reduce it, which can only be explained
by the effect on the inflammatory process in the stomach,
accompanying both hyposecretion and hypersecretion. In both cases,
a decrease in inflammatory phenomena leads to the normalization of
secretory activity. The anti-inflammatory effect is due to
polysaccharides (mucus, pectins), carotenes and vitamin U. In
experiments, psyllium preparations also inhibit the motor activity
of the stomach and have an antispasmodic effect. Pectin substances
of plantain in granular form ("Plantaglucid") have a protective
effect against stomach ulcers caused in the experiment by
butadione. Preparations from plantain leaves in rabbits normalize
the content of cholesterol, b-lipoproteins, total lipids,
phospholipid / cholesterol ratio, and reduce the prevalence of
aortic atheromatosis. Plantain has some calming effect, lowers
blood pressure.
Plantain has expectorant and emollient properties. Like all mucus,
plantain protects the epithelium of the respiratory tract, has an
anti-inflammatory effect, helps to thin sputum, normalize the
properties of the surfactant of the respiratory tract and restore
the functions of the ciliated epithelium.
Locally, plantain for wounds and ulcers caused by experiment,
accelerates healing, has a hemostatic, anti-inflammatory and
bactericidal effect.
