Annatto Seed (Bixa orellana L) is native to Brazil and is used as a nutritional ingredient to support the female reproductive cycle and as a natural yellow - orange colorant for many food and cosmetic applications.  

This seed is cultivated and sustainable and harvested year round in several parts of Brazil. It is removed from the husk flower, cleaned, sorted and stored in whole form.  

It is used as a colorant in many foods, most notably the yellow cheeses, ice cream, margarine and other dairy products.  It is also used as a colorant in cosmetic applications, most notable lipstick. 

As a dietary supplement, Annatto has been shown through anecdotal cultural data to help in balancing the female hormonal cycle and reduce cramping.  Other data has shown Annatto to be helpful in reducing spasms and to act as a hypotensive.
